Tennessee Pottery Studio

PORTFOLIO

An organic art compound

Designed around an existing pottery kiln, this studio is located in a rural location near the Tennessee/Alabama border. The artist had access to a number of used concrete culverts that were integrated into the design and became the basis for the overall form. Organic curved stone walls with erratic edges mirrored broken pottery and are set in contrast to the smooth concrete of the culverts. The exposed wood structure of the walls for the studio and other interior spaces were to be burned using the traditional Japanese method known as Shou Sugi Ban giving a nod to the firing process of the pottery.
