This is a competition entry for artistically designed bus
shelter in Bloomington, Indiana.
My vision for this bus shelter used two curving roof sections,
separated by a ribbon of glass, to convey a sense of movement
and direction. The ribbon skylight allowed natural light
to illuminate the interior while still providing protection
from the elements. The sweeping curves of these “wings” reflected
the rolling hills of Southern Indiana’s natural landscape.
In the sense of Organic Architecture, materials would all
be used in their natural states and colors. The hope was
to bring down their initial cost and eliminate the need for
continued maintenance. Two flagstone walls helped deter vandalism
by not providing a smooth surface for writing graffiti. A
tempered glass screen offered visibility and safety while
still providing protection to anyone sitting on the curved
wood bench. Finally, the roof structure was to be
constructed of curved laminated timbers, with “ocean
wave” cedar shingles on the wood roof deck. Provided
that the roof structure was built with care allowing air
to flow behind the shingles, durability and maintenance should
not have been a problem.
